US191: Natural Polysaccharides As Synergistic Agents In Diabetes Therapy: Bridging Tradition And Innovation

Muhammad Hasnun Md Yusoff Analytical Biochemistry Research Centre (ABrC) Universiti Sains Malaysia

This project explores Micromelum minutum (cemumar) leaves as a novel source of bioactive polysaccharides for diabetes management. Using deep eutectic solvents (DES), a green extraction method, a high yield (13.30%) of polysaccharides was achieved. The extracted polysaccharides exhibited potent antioxidant activity and significantly inhibited α-amylase (86.23%), surpassing the standard drug acarbose. With no observed cytotoxicity, these findings highlight cemumar's potential as a safe, natural antidiabetic agent. This research not only valorizes an underutilized plant but also aligns with the growing demand for sustainable, plant-based healthcare solutions, paving the way for future nutraceutical development.
