Learning should be simple and fun. In this era of advancing technology, we should be able to utilize it to maximise the potential of young children’s ability to absorb information and learn new things. Gone are the days of traditional workbooks filled with monochrome pages and minimal interactivity. Children today are very much drawn to media with saturated and bright colours, with animations and sounds. In Internet User Survey of Malaysia 2020, it was established that the number of children who use the Internet grew by 155% between 2016 to 2020. The average child aged 5-8 spends more than 81% of screen time on mobile tablets. Thus we must make use of the time spent by children on devices for beneficial causes such as education. There are a number of Jawi learning apps available on the market today such as in android studio that offer gamified apps. However, these are too streamlined in that it has a limited range for ages and does not take into account the learner’s proficiency. The purpose of this research is to develop an interactive learning media mobile application by using gamification and artificial intelligence approaches in smartphone, to help children increase interest and enthusiasm for learning Jawi and improve their understanding of the material presented. Although there is a wide availability of Jawi learning applications, few to none of them accommodate to the children’s actual needs and level of proficiency. Thus, this research aims to utilise artificial intelligence algorithms in the process of developing this application which are natural language processing (NLP) and adaptive learning algorithms on top of gamification. The resulting application should be able to cater to 5-9 year olds in aiding their learning of Jawi.
