Understanding standard subtitles can be a time-consuming process for viewers as they need to repeat the scenes or pause the video to look up difficult words in a dictionary. SMUBBED (Smart Intralingual Subtitles for Vocabulary Education) can address this issue; click on a specific word within the subtitle to display its word forms and meanings in context. At any time, selecting a confusing word in the subtitle will bring up a pop-up outlining dictionary-like explanations of words. A pilot study on the effectiveness of intralingual subtitling among 56 university participants in UiTM Pahang has shown that after watching an intralingual subtitled documentary, the treated participants recorded a significantly higher vocabulary gain. SMUBBED can be licensed into software and mobile apps for adding smart subtitles to educational content in English courses. It is an innovative tool aligning with modern teaching methods and IR 4.0 concept, aiming to revolutionise education through technology and automation.
