Mastering idiomatic expressions is a challenging component of language learning. In order to help put idiomatic expressions in context, the Meownglish book series uses comics that feature animals and their human-like interactions with each other, focusing on the fictitious conversations that contain idiomatic expressions. It is easier for readers to identify with cats and other pets as many of them have pets themselves. This reduces the barrier to learning. The Meownglish books are bilingual, reducing the need to reach for a dictionary at every unknown word, and contain explanations and examples of situations where the idioms can be applied. A glossary is also provided. The books have been distributed to pupils at two primary schools in Terengganu as part of the Meownglish Reading Program. The reception from the pupils has been encouraging, both in terms of increased interest in reading and comprehension of idiomatic expressions.
